OBJECTIVE I wanted to learn more about other aspects of design, so I took on a project that would allow me to discover the process of designing for motion. For this project, I chose a vocabulary word that could be shown through motion. I chose to work with the word 'atom' because I felt it had some great visual elements to work with. You will notice that the animation features a simplified atom, with the nucleus at its center, two orbits, and electron pairs entering onto the orbits.

APPROACH I knew that in order to make this animation straight and to the point, I would have to keep the design clean and simple. Another reason that I chose to keep this animation simple is because scientific vocabulary can be quite confusing, so a concise explanation of an object that is rather complex will make 'atom' a less daunting word to learn. I started out by sketching ideas for this and went through several different story variations. Upon choosing my final sequence, I made a flip book so that I would know exactly how I wanted each part of this animation to move. Once I was sure about my concept, I transferred this idea into objects in Illustrator and finally into a short animation in After Effects.
