OBJECTIVE The objective of this project was to create conceptual drawings for a hypothetical animated movie to be released by Dream-Works Animation, Ecotopia. The hypothetical movie is a sci-fi film where a scientist and his assistant are the only living creatures left on their desolate planet and they have to attempt to revive life through use of the scientist's knowledge and experiment.

APPROACH While the task of creating an entire hypothetical world where a scientist lives seemed like a daunting task at first, this proved to be a great learning experience. I chose a color scheme that seemed to be appropriate for a sun-ravenged world, and decided to keep my illustrations clean and simple while still getting the point of the illustrations across.

DR. EVERGREEN The scientist character featured in the Ecotopia film is named Dr. Evergreen. Above you can see Dr. Evergreen and his robot companion that he built to assist him in his lab. While working in his lab to try and restore life on his planet, Dr. Evergreen had an accident in his lab which caused him to transform into a fantastic being (seen above on the right). The fantastic being that he transformed into is part human, part robot, and closely resembles the robot that he built as his assistant.

ENVIRONMENT The following challenge was to create an environment in which Dr. Evergreen would live. On the left, we see his solar-powered dwelling in the middle of a barren planet before the accident in his lab occurs. The illustration on the right shows his dwelling that has transformed after the transformation into a gigantic biosphere, shown at night.

DR. EVERGREEN'S LAB The next step was to create an illustration of the lab that we envision Dr. Evergreen working in. I chose to do an aerial view for this illustration to emphasize the amount of plants Dr. Evergreen was growing in his lab.

PROMOTIONAL POSTER The final aspect of this project was creating a promotional movie poster. This was challenging because the poster had to tell a story about the movie plot and generate interest for the movie. I created a concept around a plot point that I found interesting and used light and color to evoke dramatic tones.
